Why So Many Fuzzy Black Caterpillars Are Crawling Across Texas
This is where Sandra and Charles McKee have recreated a complete replica of the famous mansion. The couple designed the home by watching the television show and paying attention to every detail. You can arrange tours of the house and also attend special murder mystery events. McKee’s favorite room is the kitchen, which features a life-sized Lily Munster.

I brush-painted two finish coats of each color on all exterior surfaces. I started with the light gray on the trim – I wanted the trim to be the lightest color on the house, and worked progressively darker as I went. I wound up painting the roof panels Euro gray, with a few other shades in between on the masonry, balcony, and the many decorative architectural details. I knew there would be touch-ups required later on, so I kept a list of what color went where and the formula for each. I wasn’t worried about slight color variation because I planned to work any differences into the weathering later.

The furniture is covered in a thick layer of dust and the living room remains the exact same as it was that one December night. I followed the assembly sequence as called for in the instructions. The instructions recommend using the foundation base as a jig when putting together the various subassemblies that make up the body of the house.

Was shot in color, giving us a a taste of what a non-black and white version of the living room would look like. After production of So Goes My Love ended, both house sets were put into storage. The house was then seen in a number of Universal productions through the 1950s (see List of appearances in film and television, below).
Gwynne also added a stutter whenever Herman was angry or wanted to make a point, and he frequently left his mouth open, adding to the effect of a goofy, less frightening figure. The show was produced by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, who were already known for creating the Leave It to Beaver television series. Prior to that, they had written many episodes of Amos 'n' Andy, a popular network radio program, during its half-hour comedy era. Appearing almost exactly as the set house did on television, the only difference is that this Texan version appears newer. The ultimate goal of the McKees, however, is for the house to look just as it did in the show.

Haunted mansion
They spent years renovating their Victorian-style home to look just like the house in the sitcom. Since there were no blueprints of the fictional home, the McKees watched all 70 episodes to ensure they tended to every detail. As Universal jointly produced The Munsters, the show was able to employ the copyrighted designs.
The house used for exterior shots was originally built for the film So Goes My Love. In 1964 the Victorian style house was converted to the Munster Mansion, and given spooky and decrepit look. The McKees lived full time in the Munster home until six years ago, when they moved next door to a brighter house with no cobwebs. The little ones were scared, so everyone slept in Lily and Herman’s room. The costumes and appearances of the family members other than Marilyn were based on the classic monsters of Universal Studios films from the 1930s and 1940s. Universal produced The Munsters as well and was thus able to use these copyrighted designs, including their iconic version of Frankenstein’s monster for Herman.

Not only is it home to Screams Halloween Theme Park, it’s rumored to be haunted. Local Cajun restaurant Catfish Plantation advertises its cast of ghosts (ask the owner about the levitating fry basket). Unexplained turning door handles and tales of an elevator-riding girl ghost draw tourists to the Rogers Hotel. Stacy Randall is a wife, mother, and freelance writer from NOLA that has always had a love for DIY projects, home organization, and making spaces beautiful.
The exterior is to be painted darker, aged, and distressed in order to achieve the decayed look of the original Munster Mansion. With a little more age and dust, the two homes will be nearly indistinguishable. Charles and Sandra McKee have spent the last nine or so years turning their Victorian home into a nearly perfect replica of the famous ’60s sitcom Munster mansion.
And if a wealthy family, a freestanding tub of water would be brought into the bedroom for bathing. McKee says she heard her husband’s voice calling her from outside through the open windows. When she went outside, she saw her husband just pulling into the driveway. When they entered the house together, a small fire was burning on Eddie Munster’s balcony. They quickly doused the flames but never figured out what—or who—started the fire. Collectors inform the McKees when any items from the show’s set come up for sale.
The dishes in their dining room and kitchen are actual props; the wood cook stove in the kitchen—identical to the one in the show—was a Craigslist find. Every time you pay federal taxes, you’re contributing to these lands. The Munster Mansion is the McKees’ actual residence, so you can’t stay overnight.
In addition, original cast members from the show sometimes show up to support the mansion. In the mid-2000s, for the second season of Desperate Housewives, the second floor was demolished and all of the remaining architectural details on the first floor were removed. A new second floor was constructed with a somewhat similar design, changing the original mansard gable into a gambrel gable, reflecting a more Dutch Colonial Revival architectural style. Rudy Enriquez, now a retired music manager, has refused to sell the property, though he has admitted to frequenting the site to feed his two cats who live there.

But the overall shape of the home, separate rooms, and asymmetrical shape are hallmarks of the Victorian Gothic era. Plus, those beautiful architectural details come with a lot of maintenance and repair work. If you purchase an older home, you should also expect some electrical and plumbing updates. Plus, it’s critical to be aware of the strong likelihood of lead paint. The third floor also features a half bath in addition to spare rooms and storage space.
It’s worth noting that this home inspired many modern houses as well as Victorian home reconstructions. But, very few have some of the features present in the fictional TV house. For example, the Munster family home was intentionally much darker to give it a spookier appearance. For example, this classic Victorian Gothic home features many separate rooms, very unlike the open floor plans of modern homes.
